New Identity

“New Identity” is my another experimental project for Greenlight. In this project, I tried to involve other rather than me and myself. With this experiment, I have tried to experiment with our capability of understanding others emotions.

During COVID-19 pandemic, wearing face mask became our new identity. Because of this new identity more often we can’t observe facial expression of our significant other. We can only perceive their eyes. I started with a simple question like “Can our eyes express emotions?” and ended up with question like “How well we can understand others emotion specially with our new identity?”. And that became a major influence behind this experiment.

For this experiment, I asked people to sit in front of camera and covered their mouth with facemask. The I asked them to live through their most sad and happy memory of life. I captured their face when they were going through their memory as video. Also I took portraits after each memory segment.
